Belpotato.be will collect compulsory contributions from members from this year.
If the grower opts for the contribution based on area, a basic fee of 15 euros will be charged and one euro per hectare. The first five hectares will not be counted. If the areas may not be used, the flat rate of 150 euros will be charged in combination with also the basic amount of 15 euros.
The grower must give permission via DjustConnect to pass on the potato acreage info.
Belpotato.be, the trade association for the potato sector, unites Belgian potato producers, traders and processors, and was founded four years ago by the General Farmers' Syndicate (ABS), Boerenbond, Belgapom, the Walloon potato organisation Fiwap and the Walloon agricultural organisation FWA. .
As a goal, Belpotato.be should develop the potato sector sustainably, technically, economically and ecologically, for all players involved in the chain. Among other things, they realised the ‘Code of conduct for drawing up contracts in the potato sector’, which helps to keep the relationship between producer and buyer in balance, and the manual ‘Evaluation of seed potato quality’, with recommendations for the storage and preparation of seed potatoes before planting. It also acts together through Belpotato towards the government.
From this year, the organisation will start collecting contributions from stakeholders.
It is essential for Belpotato.be to have autonomous and stable structural funding from 2024 to be able to continue its activities for the benefit of the potato sector and undertake new actions in the long term,’ it reads. ‘The tasks that have become necessary, given the rapid evolution of legislation and requirements imposed on the agricultural and agri-food sectors, are increasingly delegated by the authorities to the relevant sectors. These include sectoral monitoring, development, information and interprofessional consultation. The latter requires permanent resources, both in terms of human resources and operational costs.’
Each stakeholder is therefore now required to contribute annually. Thereby, the potato supplier's contribution will be the same as that of the buyers (trade or processing industry) to maintain the equality of all partners within the organisation.
Potato growers will be given the choice of making a flat-rate contribution or a contribution based on potato acreage. The latter choice will be calculated through the area declared in the CAP declaration, if the farmer has given his consent. If the grower chooses the contribution based on the area, a basic amount of 15 euros will be charged and one euro per hectare. The first five hectares will not be counted. If the areas may not be used, the flat rate of 150 euros will be charged in combination with also the basic amount of 15 euros. For anyone with less than 150 hectares of agricultural land, it is therefore advantageous to give permission.
Giving permission to base the calculation on the declared area ind e CAP declaration must be done via the data sharing platform DjustConnect for Flemish farms. The use of DjustConnect is free for all farmers and horticulturists.
